like president lincoln before him, president obama listed a series of things that we all take for granted today that the constitution did not provide for. such as a huge standing army, the biggest one in the world. we have shown you before on this program how much modern day republicans disagree with their hero, ronald reagan on everything from tax increases to death ceiling increases to banning assault weapons. the only thing they claim to admire as much as him, is the first president, lincoln, if they heard lincoln say this in the first inaugural address they would have booed him. the newseum in washington where all day festivals have marked the second inauguration of barack obama. it began with a church service early this morning. but the celebration is far from over. the inaugural parade itself is currently under way and the first family is watching from the viewing stand just outside the white house. early this afternoon the president sent crowds along pennsylvania avenue wild when he and the first lady got out of the motorcade and walked several blocks waving to the crowds. it was a rare close-up look for many. the highlight was the president's inaugural address way was powerful and, i believe, lincolnesque. he called for an end to perpetual wars and gave a historic shout out to gay rights. on many fronts the president said it was time to act. >> for now decisions are upon us, and we cannot afford delay. we must act knowing that our work will be imperfect. we must act knowing that today's victories will be only partial and that it will be up to those who stand here in four years and 40 years and 400 years hence to advance the timeless spirit once conferred

, the u.s. army's and drum corps -- they will escort president obama down pennsylvania avenue during the inaugural parade. ♪ [drum line] >> it began in april with the production team. it prepares the materials, the music, the drill that we do. parade marching does not require quadrilles, but we do a great deal of research with 18th-century music portrayed on modern instruments that aren't -- that are reminiscent of instruments during the revolutionary war. the rangers a range of vignettes -- are arranged vignettes music from the 18th century that has military origin. they are arranged and sequenced. we had a three sequences. we performed a wide variety of music from that era. there is roughly a balance between the five group, which is 24 soldiers, 24 soldiers in the beagle group, an 15-18 in the drum group. two instruments, the bass drum and a snare drum. combining those three angel -- ancient signaling instruments into modern arrangements is quite a challenge, but the results are magnificent. >> this afternoon, we're going to do a standing music rehearsal. we will stand in the for

in tax increases with obama care. new tax increases at the beginning of this month. and now they are calling for even more tax increases, and they are not calling to cut spending. they are calling for spending increases. so basically what they're saying is, they want americans to pay more so washington can spend more. that's not going to help the economy, and that is not going to close the gap and balance the budget. the reason we want to balance the budget is not to make the numbers add up. we think that's necessary for growth and opportunity. we think it's necessary to make sure that our kids don't get this debt that they won't be able to handle if we keep going down the path we are on. >> but there are certainly those in the white house who would take issue with what you said or might even say to use your own criticism that's a straw man argume argument. they were prepared to cut additional spending to be part of a bigger agreement that republicans weren't able to agree to. there is more room for spending cuts. it's a matter of how you do it. >> the president was insistin
